How to Measure Employee Engagement

Many company owners and leaders understand the importance of employee engagement. It’s no secret that employee engagement improves company profitability, return on investment, and overall success. However, determining where to start and how to measure if your employees are engaged is another story.

If you’re struggling to figure out where to begin or unsure if this is a current need for your business then here are a few ways to measure employee engagement and a few key performance indicators to help get you started:

  • Measure retention or employee turnover rate. This is a key performance indicator that should be regularly monitored, because if the turnover rate is high then you’re losing money. High turnover rates hinder the ROI of the company. One way to help solve this problem is to monitor employee satisfaction to help gain a better understanding of how your employees are feeling, which allows you to determine the real problems and find a solution.
  • Create a suggestion box to pinpoint any weaknesses within the company. For example, company culture, communication, lack of employee equipment or materials, etc. The caveat with feedback is that companies and management must act on the feedback they receive from employees or employees will remain disengaged.
  • Send engagement surveys. Surveys are productive and successful when they’re executed properly. Take a pulse survey or short survey with five questions or less to gauge employee views and ideas. These surveys typically focus on one area to ensure they’re clear, concise, and maintain a high completion rate. A sample survey question could be, do your employees feel they receive recognition when they deserve it or have the support and assistance when they need it? There’s a laundry list of questions but these are just a few examples.

Ultimately, the first step is to measure, track and analyze the data; devising a strategy and implementing a platform will follow.
